The general population does not have to take any special measures to protect itself against avian influenza. Only people with direct contact with diseased poultry, laboratory workers and patients or families of patients suffering from an indefinite lung disease need to observe special safety regulations. General hygiene measures suffice.
General Hygiene Measures Irrespective of the current avian influenza issue, it is wise to take general hygiene measures for every infectious disease. They include, for example, thorough washing of the hands with soap, no coughing at people, avoid shaking hands, change clothing if it could be contaminated and throw used tissues away in a personal plastic bag. The conjunctivas of the eyes should also be seen as a point of entry for pathogens. Avoid crowds. Carry out suitable disinfection measures (e.g. toilets, door handles).
There is not yet a vaccine available for the avian influenza virus.
Verification of Avian Influenza A blood test can verify whether a person has avian influenza or not. The therapy for viral diseases depends on the infectiousness and clinical condition of the patient. Consult your general practitioner in time. He will then act according to the current level of knowledge. Neuraminidase inhibitors (e.g. Tamiflu) can help in the case of definite diagnoses if taken early. However, no controlled studies on Tamiflu and avian influenza have yet been conducted. It is urgently advised not to take Tamiflu without specific diagnosis.
