General Protective Measures

In Germany poultry has been confined to pen. The ban on free ranging will provisionally remain in force until the end of April 2006.

Poultry Markets
Poultry markets, like other events involving poultry, have been banned for a limited period of time. Exceptions are allowed, but are being controlled more strictly than in the past and limited to local events. They must take place indoors. The animals must undergo clinical examination before such an event. The (low) costs for this must be borne by the holders or organizers.

Wild Bird Monitoring
It has been agreed with the German state governments to look actively for dead swans so that as many as possible of these evidently very susceptible animals are examined within the framework of wild bird monitoring.

Human Population
The human population should report dead animals to the authorities immediately. Such animals should not be touched with the bare hands.

Tourism and Imports
The customs authorities have been instructed to look more closely for the importation of illegal poultry and poultry products when people or imports enter the country. Controls at airports, seaports, on the roads and in trains have been stepped up to this end. There is already a ban in the EU on the importation of poultry and poultry products as well as other birds, feathers and untreated hunting trophies from Turkey and other countries affected by avian influenza. They include China, Russia and Thailand. Travelers are being informed of the risks more strongly.
